SAP Joule is deeply integrated into the application and offers proactive, context-specific support. In many processes—especially those involving complex relationships between data from different sources or finely balanced workflows with many dependencies—this saves time, leads to greater efficiency, and improves process quality. Significantly accelerate the creation of tenders and supplier qualification through AI-supported analysis of previous processes and partners, and the drafting of new documents based on this analysis.
SAP Joule – useful, integrated standard
A chat window provides access to important standard AI functions that offer valuable support for time-consuming, recurring tasks. Depending on the system configuration and permissions, several predefined use cases can be utilized.
SAP Joule Studio – customized, AI-based process automation
In the future, this extension will enable companies to create and use their own AI agents. This means that SAP Joule can also be integrated into highly individual processes with customized functions. This will also be possible across multiple systems (e.g., via integration with Microsoft applications).
SAP AI Foundation – Platform for AI developers
The AI Foundation is the technological basis for all AI functions within the SAP Business Technology Platform (SAP BTP). It is closely linked to SAP Joule and forms the central portal for working with and further developing generative AI models. Tools such as Agent Builder and Skill Builder, which can be used to create your own AI agents, and the Prompt Engineering Playground are available.

The AI assistant SAP Joule is available as standard to all customers using SAP S/4HANA Cloud Public Edition Release 2402 or higher. The current release of “GROW with SAP” delivers all currently available AI components via automated updates. These installations provide limited standard functionality. Those who want to create their own AI agents or use the AI Foundation development platform need comprehensive AI expertise, license extensions, and additional budget.
Current release statuses, SAP BTP with Joule authorizations, the corresponding configured SAP IAS for user login, access to relevant SAP modules, and the integration of the required third-party systems are important prerequisites. In addition, data quality and security and compliance requirements play a decisive role. Companies should therefore introduce AI in a planned and strategic manner.
Yes, SAP Joule includes important measures that ensure data protection and compliance so that AI functions comply with applicable legal requirements. However, SAP can only create the conditions for this; companies themselves are responsible for implementing the measures. For example, SAP provides functions such as access controls, encryption, audit logs, and the like, and processes data transparently.
There is no general answer to this question. Depending on the license, some AI functions are included. SAP divides these into Joule Base and Joule Premium. In addition, SAP uses tokens as currency for AI usage. Companies must purchase tokens and can then use them. This makes the costs difficult to calculate. Added to this are the costs for implementation, possible additional licenses and integrations, as well as employee training and process conversion.
