As part of a complete overhaul of the IT infrastructure at WECO, the market leader for fireworks in Europe, Sycor implemented high-availability Microsoft Exchange 2013 and Microsoft Lync 2013 solutions. WECO now benefits from smooth, reliable communication processes.
With fireworks "Made in Germany", WECO Pyrotechnische Fabrik GmbH has become the market leader for fireworks in Europe. Today, the group founded in 1948 has an international presence with four locations in Germany and eight more around the world. 500 employees produce over 2,500 individual articles in all pyrotechnics classes. The subsidiary SF-Automotive Freiberg serves as a supplier for the production of pyrotechnic granulates for gas generators in airbag manufacturing.
"The company's growth over the last few years led to the decision in 2014 to bring our IT infrastructure up to date, thus ensuring the ongoing best possible support for all processes," says Andreas Sommerfeld, WECO Project Manager, looking back. "To ensure smooth, reliable communication with customers and between the locations, we also wanted to upgrade Microsoft Lync and Microsoft Exchange to the latest versions and establish high-availability solutions for them." The contract for the implementation was awarded to the Sycor Group because the Göttingen-based IT experts were also able to cover Active Directory requirements in addition to Microsoft Exchange and Microsoft Lync.
"At the start of the project, WECO was still in the midst of a migration from Microsoft Exchange 2003 to the 2010 version. We therefore had to organize the existing structures before we could set up a high-availability Exchange 2013 solution," is how Sycor Project Manager Kathrin Ullrich describes the initial situation. Then the Sycor team implemented the new Exchange environment for WECO with around 500 mailbox users worldwide as an on-premise solution for in-house operation. "We integrated AutoDiscover as a dynamic process for configuring the e-mail profiles, since more than 90 percent of the users work through a Citrix terminal server. We also implemented ActiveSync and Outlook Anywhere to enable a connection to the Exchange Server without a virtual private network (VPN)," Kathrin Ullrich continues. Integrating existing interfaces and linking to Microsoft Lync were also part of the implementation. The experts from Göttingen handled the removal of the Microsoft Exchange environment as well – and provided instructions for the data migration that was performed independently by WECO's internal IT department. "However, Sycor employees were available for 2nd-level support in this process," adds WECO Project Manager Andreas Sommerfeld.
"Choosing Sycor as our service provider was exactly the right decision. Accurately implementing the installation of the high-availability Microsoft Exchange 2013 and Microsoft Lync 2013 solutions perfectly supported us in making our IT landscape fit to meet current requirements. And we can rely on smooth communication processes."

A systematic analysis of current usage behavior at the start of the project and the problems identified in the existing Microsoft Lync 2010 structure formed the basis for the design and implementation of the new high-availability Microsoft Lync 2013 environment. "The tasks also included updating all locations of the WECO Group, supporting the user migration and removing the old 2010 environment," comments Kathrin Ullrich, Sycor Project Manager.

Accurately implementing the installation of the high-availability Microsoft Exchange 2013 and Microsoft Lync 2013 solutions perfectly supported us in making our IT landscape fit to meet current requirements. And we can rely on smooth communication processes," says WECO Project Manager Andreas Sommerfeld with conviction.
