Microsoft announces new version of its classic Office application suite for 2021.
During Microsoft's technology conference Ignite at the end of September 2020, the company announced some interesting news around Office and Office Server. Find out in our article which highlights you can expect in the coming year.
Many thought that Office 2019 would be the last classic Microsoft Office version with perpetual usage rights. But this is not true. Despite the push towards Office applications through cloud-based use, such as Microsoft 365 and Office 365, Microsoft will release a new version of its classic Office application suite in the second half of 2021.
For those unfamiliar with Microsoft Office: It's a suite of apps including Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook and more, available in different editions: Office Professional Plus, Office Standard, Office for Mac and certain retail versions.
As of today, it is not known when the new version will be available and whether it will then be Office 2021. More details are expected by the end of this calendar year.
A number of products closely associated with Office are the Office Servers, better known as Exchange Server, SharePoint Server, Skype for Business Server and Project Server. As a consequence, new versions of these server products will also be launched in the second half of 2021. But the servers will probably only be available with the purchase of a subscription licence. How exactly this will work is also unknown at the moment. It could be an Exchange Server 2021 subscription licence, but also a 'Microsoft 365 E3 Exchange Server add on' subscription for certain hybrid deployment options. More information on this will also be announced by the end of the year.
Does your organisation still use Office 2013 or 2016? Or Exchange Server 2013, SharePoint Server 2016 and so on? Then it's time to upgrade to the latest - up to date - version 2019. Upgrading now would be optimal to prepare for the next version of the applications.
